Social Studies
Uniquely Colorado

Students use geographic tools to learn about Colorado's physical regions. Historically, students analyze and gather evidence from primary and secondary sources to examine the diversity of people who came to Colorado over time, where they settled, and why they came. As students examine the development of Colorado over time, they identify significant events, eras and ideas. Simultaneously, students are exposed to the significant events/eras in the United States and relate patterns in US history to patterns in Colorado's history. Last, students identify the structure and function of state government, explore issues faced by the state, and consider potential solutions.

Science
Resourceful Choices

In this unit, will use their knowledge from the previous unit to understand the importance of different resources on Earth.  Students will recognize the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources and compare different types of resources to see advantages and disadvantages of each resource.  We will also look into the consequences of using certain types of resources.

Math
Equations with Word Problems

In this unit, students will be applying knowledge from the previous units to the language of math.  Students will complete computations based upon the language within a word problem.  Students will be expected to determine what a word problem is asking of them, as well as what operation to use based upon the language within the problem.  Students will be expected to solve both one-step, two -step and mult-step word problems.

Reading

Uncovering Theme and Main Idea

During this unit of study, students continue to develop their ability to identify the main idea of text.  The main idea is often implied by the author and inferred by the reader.  Students need to use multiple reading strategies (i.e. inferring, visualizing, and determining importance) to identify the main idea.  The previous unit focused on text features in nonfiction texts as a tool to determine what the author felt was important. Students continue using determining importance along with visualizing and inferring to uncover the main idea. Hold students accountable to support their thinking by citing textual evidence.

Second Step

Empathy and Skills for Learning

The first unit of Second Step focuses on social skills that encourage learning behaviors and empathy within the classroom.  Students will begin their learning by exploring the importance of putting themselves in someone elses shoes and how that can support their relationships in the classroom.  They will learn skills to be assertive while being a learner, as well as was to respect the different types of learners within a classroom.

Writing

Conveying Ideas through Expository Texts

The Writing to Explain unit emphasizes a clearly defined topic with support that is grouped into paragraphs or sections. Students work, with guidance, toward organizing multi-paragraph texts in a variety of forms. They also focus on using precise language , which was emphasized in previous units of study. Within the writing process, revision is elevated during this unit; however, not all pieces will go to the final publishing stage.
